Best things about babies

In the beginning, nearly everything about babies is wonderful. A few months in, of course, and the novelty has worn off. Give it another year, and suddenly you miss nearly everything about the baby stage.

So before I forget too many of them, here are some of my favorite things about babies.

  • The sweet smell of baby! (And no, I don’t mean diapers!)
  • Fuzzy, downy hair, especially right after it’s been washed and dried.
  • Wide eyes taking in everything.
  • Tiny fingers, toes, ears, nose, mouth—and clothes.
  • Sweet, peaceful sleep (right up until I get a neck cramp)
  • Unfettered, unabashed smiles, happy squeals and cheerful posturing—especially the sheer joy at just seeing Mommy or Daddy.
  • The quiet moments.
  • Baby babbling.
  • The delight of discovering hands, then feet.

What are your favorite things about the baby stage?

My sweet little turtle

Rebecca, unfortunately, seems to be pathologically incapable of sleeping on her back. No matter how many times I read the SIDS studies to her, it just doesn’t seem to sink in. So, to keep the family peace, we let her sleep on her tummy.

However, sometimes she’s not quite content to just peacefully slip into dreamland. Instead, she squirms into a bit of a frenzy—especially when, as has happened a lot more frequently lately, her squirming rolls her onto her side or, heaven forbid, onto her back.

This is her cue to scream bloody murder.

Finally I realized what the problem is. My sweet little girl rolls onto her back and gets upset because she can’t get back to her comfortable sleep position.

She is, in fact, a turtle.

Grandma’s ninetieth

Yesterday was my grandma’s ninetieth birthday. My angel aunt flew Grandma out and arranged a surprise party for her with all of her grandchildren in the area (there were grandma, one of her kids, five grandkids, three grandsons-in-law, one date and two great-grandchildren there).

The delicious cake—no, that’s not 90 candles. Also pictured: said angel aunt, one of four women named Rebecca in the room (the others were me, my daughter and my cousin’s date, Becky)

A wonderful night—many thanks to Aunt Janie for throwing a wonderful party!

Remember to vote!

This Saturday, John McCain, Sarah Palin, Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty were dealt a stunning defeat. I’m still barely able to talk about this emotional event, but I have to tell someone.

Despite “teh best costume evar” and our best campaigning efforts, we didn’t even place in the costume contest at our friend’s Halloween party (the only Halloween event we were able to participate in this year, unless visiting the doctor counts).

So, since I’m desperately in need of validation, feel free to tell me how good our costumes are:
halloween costumes: uncle sam, John McCain, Sarah Palin, lady liberty

And me:
me as Sarah Palin

We didn’t even get to give a concession speech (it was another one of those “oh, I thought you were going to do it!” moments).

On the plus side, several people came up to us to tell us how awesome we were much they liked our costumes, including the host’s mom 😀 .

As we were leaving, the hostess told us, “Oh, I knew I should have voted! I would have totally voted for you guys!”

“Well,” I said, “Just don’t make that mistake on Tuesday!”

Hayden’s First Trick-or-Treat

And this year, his only trick-or-treat:

Thanks, Jaime, for taking this video and letting me post it!

Easy diagnosis

You know Halloween’s not going to go quite as planned when the first thing your two-year-old says after a four-hour nap is, “I tired.” But the real key here should have been when we asked Hayden if he wanted candy and he said, “Nanee make my tummy hurt.”

After considerable debate, with Hayden landing squarely in both the “I want bed,” and the “Hadween” camps. We coaxed him into the costume I stayed up until midnight Thursday cobbling together and headed out for the neighbor’s trunk or treat.

I guess we were early, though, because no one else was out. So we headed across town to my sister’s to show off our costumes. Hayden split his visit between whining and laying on the floor, and playing with a ball and the fish, then we headed back to see if the trunk-or-treat was really at 6:30 instead of 5:30. But Ryan cruised right on by, thinking I’d say something if it looked like they were there (while I was thinking he’d turn in automatically).

When we got home, Hayden again requested bed. After three days of ruined plans, intermittent fevers and whining, it was suddenly clear that he needed to see the doctor. We took off most of Hayden’s costume and headed to the after-hours pediatrician. We only have two pictures of me and a video of Hayden in costume that my sister took.

The doctor visit took about half an hour—double ear infection. Armed with acetaminophin and antibiotics, we’re ready to lick this medicine—but not in time for trick-or-treating or probably another Halloween party tonight.

But Hayden’s already on the mend. This morning for breakfast, a wan and completely solemn Hayden looked up at me and asked for, “Nanee pease.”

It’s good to have our Hayden back.
