Share and share alike

I’m not sure how this came about, but sometimes Hayden is very good at sharing. This is pretty surprising coming from a 14-month-old-as-yet-only-child. Ryan suggested that it’s because we always share with him. I’m not sure; it usually isn’t my screaming that prompts Hayden to share with me.

Hayden 13 months 026.jpgI’m pretty sure, however, that our ‘lady and the tramp’ moments have had an effect on Hayden. If I lean in to give him a kiss on the lips, he opens his mouth for some food. I guess we know where his heart lies.

So last night while I was making dinner, Hayden was sitting on the floor of the kitchen with a pretzel. I leaned in to give him a kiss, and he offered me his pudgy fist. “No thanks,” I told him, pulling away from the 5 millimeters of soggy pretzel sticking out of his proffered palm. I leaned in again. He tried to share with me again. “No thanks, you can have it,” I said.

He looked at me, looked at the pretzel, and looked back at me. “Num,” he said, and stuffed the pretzel in his mouth.

When I offered him chocolate chips on Sunday, he screamed for them and yelled “Num num num!” Does this count as his first word?

Happy birthday to me!

I take it all back. Ryan surprised me by taking the day off work (one of his employees also happens to work at the gym’s day care and gave Ryan a call when we arrived) to come home and straighten up and make me a cake.

And as I picked Hayden up from the gym day care, I happened to look in his mouth—and he has another new tooth. I think it must’ve come in yesterday. We missed it partially because we were expecting his next tooth to come in on the top. But no, it’s his bottom left lateral incisor. Surprises all ’round!

Happy birthday to me!

A bit of a slump

Hayden 13 months 097.jpgIt’s my birthday. I want to go back to bed. I’m tired. Hayden’s not up yet.

I keep promising myself that for my birthday, I’ll go to bed early. We shall see.

It’s funny that just a couple days ago, I was thinking “This is a great age” (about Hayden, not me), and now I’m wishing he’d hurry up and grow up (again). It seems like every stage has a “hurry up and grow up” aspect to it.

The most frustrating part of this phase is the screaming/whining. Hayden still doesn’t speak and doesn’t gesture in a particularly helpful manner most of the time. He gets frustrated when I don’t know what he wants (or just won’t let him have it) and I get frustrated with the insatiable whining, wailing and screaming. I’m a little scared to get him out of bed this morning.

But sleep has dimmed the memory of yesterday and his general grumpiness and as he calls out to me from his crib in his “man voice,” he sounds happy. Maybe today will be better. It had better be. It’s my birthday, darn it!

On the plus side, I’m excited to be 24. I like even numbers.

I think I’ll go to the gym and read something uplifting. Sigh.

Ah, young love

I was going to take a picture of the 3-4″ of snow that fell last night, but it all melted, so instead I’ll be playing catchup on pictures (I’ll tell you which one the title applies to, but I’m sure you’ll be able to guess).

Two fisted drinker. His grandma introduced him to root beer, if you’ll recall.

That’s one really weird deformity.

Tie monster!

(Cleaned out Ryan’s closet. This writhing mass now resides on the floor… on my side of the bed. Go figure.)

Here it is, young love. Whiskers needs it.

Haydie actually did that all by himself today. He was whining and trying to pick the kitty up, so I had him sit down and placed Whiskers on his lap. Spontaneous hugs. Sweet boy.

Virtually mothering

This week is the eComXpo, a virtual tradeshow for Internet marketing. This marks the third time I’ve attended the semiannual event. It’s strange to think how much things have changed over that time period:

1. Early April, Hayden’s 2 months old. I sit at the computer, Hayden is next to the desk on the floor. He gets a little tummy time, too. The nursing pillow cuddles him until he starts to get fussy. Then I lay him tummy down across my lap and pat his back. He had a little bit of a cold. He sleeps on my lap or on the floor. I can attend pretty much as much of the show as I can stand.

2. Late October, Hayden’s almost 9 months. Was he around that week? Poor kid is totally neglected since I not only have the eComXpo but an entry in the prestigious SEM Scholarship Contest at Marketing Pilgrim that I have to drive traffic to. Luckily, I do both at once and send hundreds of vCards and invitations to view my entry. Every little bit helped—I won by only 3 visitors. When I couldn’t stand to sit at the desk anymore, I tried to listen to presentations and panels while playing with Hayden; this didn’t work.

3. This week, Hayden’s 13.5 months. We’re in day 2 of the conference. There’s not as much that I’m interested in this time around. I no longer get paid by the hour (well, not to attend the conference, at least), so I try to listen to sessions while researching and writing blog posts. This doesn’t work either. I’m interested in the two panel discussions this afternoon; I’m not sure if I’ll get anything out of them if I try to listen while Haydie’s awake. And they’re conveniently scheduled right before and right after his normal nap time. There’s no way I can hope to do my thing while Haydie sits passively by.

Sigh. Yep, just sigh.

We got our St. Patrick’s Day package just in time:

And here you go, Jasmine. Hayden breaks it down, just for you. (Taken with our still camera.)
