Chocoholic Details

This was inspired by my friend Lindsey’s blog: things that you may or may not know about me (some of them are directly inspired by hers). I decided to go with the first 11 things that came to mind.

  1. I’m just a little addicted to chocolate. Okay, that’s not even close to true. Seriously, I’m not sure when the last time I went a day without chocolate was. Ryan said he’d pay me $2 if I didn’t have chocolate today. We’ll see what happens in the next couple hours. I had Skittles instead of M&Ms today. That’s progress.
  2. I have never broken a bone in my own body.
  3. I have been involved in the breaking of a bone in my sister’s body, though. (It wasn’t completely my fault. She ran into me then fell against the couch. I’m blaming the couch all the way.)
  4. I only shower every other day. Like I do anything strenuous anyway.
  5. I’ve knit for about 9 years, but I’m just okay.
  6. I’ve played the piano for 15 years, but I’m just a little better than okay.
  7. Someone complimented my piano playing Sunday. This made me very happy.
  8. I’d never stayed overnight in a hospital before I had Hayden.
  9. My sisters and I played a game at breakfast where we compared the nutrition facts on our cereal boxes. As the oldest, I always convinced my sisters that if, for example, my sodium was lower than theirs, sodium was bad for you, so I won. Sugar, of course, should be maxed out.
  10. Speaking of cereal, Crispix is the only non-pre-sweetened cereal that I don’t drown in sugar. It’s also my favorite. I bought two boxes on sale tonight.
  11. I may never learn that it’s just too stressful to try to make some or all of my Christmas gifts. I also may never finish the jewelry roll I started for my sister two years ago. It’s getting closer to done. But I haven’t picked it up in ages.

I thought 11 was good. What do you think?

A crystal ball

I think it was someone in a store (or was it at church?) that recently said to me, “Isn’t it amazing to see their little personalities emerging at this age?” Of course, I agreed (must be polite!) without really contemplating what she’d said. I’ve thought about it more and more lately. I’ve decided that if Hayden’s behavior today is indicative of his future personality, I think he’ll be:

  • persistent—if he can’t get something he wants at first, try, try again. And again. And again. Then scream. And try one more time.
  • curious—of course, most babies are into everything.
  • brave—or perhaps fearless or maybe just senseless. Nothing seems to scare him (other than sudden loud noises and shots, and even then he gets over it quickly).
  • friendly and quick to laugh—we haven’t met a stranger yet that Hayden hasn’t smiled for.
  • quiet—it seems like most of the time, he doesn’t say a whole lot. He’s in a babbling phase, but he often just quietly concentrates on whatever he’s playing with.
  • and I hope loving—this Sunday I was holding Sadie and Hayden on my lap and Hayden spontaneously reached out and gave Sadie a hug. He’s never done that before!

Of course, if this morning is any indicator, he’ll be a whiny, willful troublemaker, too.

Oh, also this Sunday at church: Hayden climbed stairs for the first time! Just in time for Nana’s and Papa’s tomorrow.

Crazy Baby Haydie

My crazy baby. Yesterday I got him up from a nap. He was waiting for me:

We’ll need to lower his mattress again soon.

House status: carpet almost entirely dry. Wallpaper bits re-eradicated. No water through the fridge door.

Another Hayden First

Yes, we hit another milestone with Hayden today: our first call to Poison Control. (It’s 1-800-222-1222, if you’re wondering.) And it’s a long story: yet another reason why people who get up at 6:45 have a jumpstart on people who get up at 9.

So, first, Ryan gets up a few minutes late for work. I can hear Hayden starting to cry. It’s before 7. Ryan gets dressed and goes out to the front of the house to put on his shoes. He comes rushing back in—the refrigerator is leaking water. Hoo boy. If I wasn’t done sleeping before, I was done sleeping now.

Step one: shut off water to house. Ryan runs out to the shut off with the monkey wrench. I grab all the extra towels in the house and take them to the kitchen. Ryan hurries back and grabs some old, empty detergent buckets we had sitting around to catch the water from the cracked (and still leaking…) tubing. But the buckets were not empty.

The buckets held the rags and towel that we’d ruined in redoing Hayden’s room. No, not with paint or caulk or mud. They were covered in little bits of wallpaper backing. Bits that had covered our floor for months, even after the project was complete. There they are, the evil things, in that picture of the redo in progress. They’re baa-aaack…

Once the water is off, extreme crisis mode is over and plain crisis mode kicks in. In plain crisis mode, it is acceptable to feed, change and clothe your hungry baby. Ryan throws all the shoes out of his closet so he can get to the crawlspace and take a look at the damage down there.

Ryan has to make a couple trips into the crawlspace and one trip to switch the water back on before plain crisis mode becomes not-so-crisis mode. In fact, in my mind, I’m already in We-often-just-live-with-problems-like-no-water-through-the-fridge-door
(But-I-hope-we-actually-get-this-one-fixed) mode. Ryan cuts off the cracked part of the tubing and tries to reconnect it to the fridge; no go. It’s still dripping, so Ryan puts a couple crimps in it and secures it so it’s hardly dripping. At this point, it’s after 8.

Hayden is crawling around, playing. He finds some of the scattered wallpaper bits. He eats one. I pull it out of his mouth. I call Poison Control. They say he’ll be fine. Ryan goes to work an hour and a half late. I still have yet to get all the wallpaper bits cleaned up and call the plumber that lives up the street.

I’m guessing this is why the fridge manufacturer suggests copper piping instead of plastic tubing…

Nonstop (mis)adventures here!

Yes, I love L&O!

Yeah, yeah, you know I <3 L&O. And you won’t believe what I’ve finally found:

They’re not a 100% perfect match for the TNT commerical, but here is some I <3 L&O merchandise in affiliation with CafePress.com:

I <3 L&O
I <3 Law & Order

Indidentally, you can get these designs on everything from T shirts and mugs to bibs, onesies, teddy bears and dog shirts. Mugs are $14.99. Don’t know who made the designs, but I promise it wasn’t me. I’m way too much of a perfectionist.
