Grandma’s ninetieth

Yesterday was my grandma’s ninetieth birthday. My angel aunt flew Grandma out and arranged a surprise party for her with all of her grandchildren in the area (there were grandma, one of her kids, five grandkids, three grandsons-in-law, one date and two great-grandchildren there).

The delicious cake—no, that’s not 90 candles. Also pictured: said angel aunt, one of four women named Rebecca in the room (the others were me, my daughter and my cousin’s date, Becky)

A wonderful night—many thanks to Aunt Janie for throwing a wonderful party!

Attack of the killer tomatoes

I defy you to not sing the theme from Attack of the Killer Tomatoes:

attack of the killer tomatoes

This is my tomato plant. Before the first frost, I pulled it out of our garden. Its roots had taken over half the garden space.

Apparently you’re supposed to prune them.

Remember to vote!

This Saturday, John McCain, Sarah Palin, Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty were dealt a stunning defeat. I’m still barely able to talk about this emotional event, but I have to tell someone.

Despite “teh best costume evar” and our best campaigning efforts, we didn’t even place in the costume contest at our friend’s Halloween party (the only Halloween event we were able to participate in this year, unless visiting the doctor counts).

So, since I’m desperately in need of validation, feel free to tell me how good our costumes are:

And me:
me as Sarah Palin

We didn’t even get to give a concession speech (it was another one of those “oh, I thought you were going to do it!” moments).

On the plus side, several people came up to us to tell us how awesome we were much they liked our costumes, including the host’s mom 😀 .

As we were leaving, the hostess told us, “Oh, I knew I should have voted! I would have totally voted for you guys!”

“Well,” I said, “Just don’t make that mistake on Tuesday!”

Those kids!

rebecca 14 sept 08 blue dress smilingI finally went through all the adorable clothes my sisters-in-law sent for Rebecca. Suddenly, instead of worrying about how often I have to do laundry and how to make sure people can tell my yellow-clad baby is a girl, I’m worried that she’ll grow out of these cute outfits before she gets to wear them! (Not likely, since she’s still just a tiny girl, but still.)

She also has just enough hair to hold a clip. Normally this clip goes on a headband, but the headband kind of leaves a dent in her skull…

Hayden continues to be a great big brother.
Hayden and Rebecca 14 sept 08
He is very sweet and gentle with Rebecca. Well, he’s very sweet in general. Lately, his favorite conversation goes like this:

“Mom? Mom? Mom?”

Sigh. “What.” Not a question.

“I yubs you . . . [voice jumps an octave] O MU-UCH!”

“I love you, too, Hayden.”

“Me? Oh wow! . . . ‘S guud.”

This cute little number is one of my favorites. It was a gift from my Aunt Janie, and it reminds me of my wedding dress.

I had pictures of Rebecca in a cute dress from my Aunt Janet, but it looks like all those pictures were on my in-laws’ camera! (Can you guys send us some copies?)

Rebecca’s baby blessing

Yesterday, Rebecca received her baby blessing, a custom for new additions in our church. Ryan gave her the blessing and it was beautiful!

I knit a lace shawl for her to use instead of a blanket (it is August, after all), and Rebecca wore the dress and bonnet that my mother made for me for my baby blessing (and my three sisters also wore it for their blessings):

What you can’t see in the picture: she’s also wearing booties that were my mother’s.

And while I was taking pictures of her in the dress, I was lucky enough to catch one of those rare sleep smiles:

Hayden meeting his new sister

I wanted Hayden to be the first member of the family to meet Rebecca. He got to the hospital about four hours after she was born, and Ryan brought him into the hospital room.

“Hi Mama,” he said. “Seeping?”

“Yes,” I said.

Then he saw the baby in the bassinet. His mouth shrank into a tiny o. “Baby!”

“Do you remember the baby in Mama’s tummy?” Ryan asked.

Hayden nodded. “Out.”

Hayden holding Rebecca for the first time

The first time Hayden held Rebecca, she started to fuss. “Ssss,” Hayden whispered. “It okay.”

He says her name “uhbecca.” I wonder how she feels about that.
